But I’m here to tell you it’s not as scary as it sounds.   I’m going to talk you through exactly what a content strategy is and how creating one can help you get crystal clear, attract your soul mate client, reduce overwhelm and grow your biz all in one! So what exactly is a content strategy?

Any strategy is simply an action plan to get you from where you are now to where you want to be. Think of it like a road map, showing you the best way to get from point A to point B, without getting horribly lost.

A content strategy helps us plan and use our content (blogs, social media posts etc) to help us get from where we are now in our business, to where we want to be.

Your dream biz destination could be any number of things – for example increasing brand awareness, a workshop launch or bringing in more leads – and that destination will change over time as your business grows and flourishes.

When you’re building your content strategy, you’ll have this destination in mind so you can create content that will get you there, right on time.

Why is a content strategy so important?

As you may have already guessed, a solid content strategy gives your content a structure and direction. Without one, you end up wandering aimlessly, most likely ending up in the biz version of the arse-end of nowhere, instead of a tropical Maldives getaway with a mojito in your hand.

The message we so often hear about creating content is BE CONSISTENT! As long as you’re posting on the reg, you’ll grow your following and your biz.

CREATE VALUE is another message we hear when we’re trying to figure out what content to create. As long as what you’re posting is of value to your audience then your brand and your biz will grow.

Now both of these things are true BUT without a content strategy, you’re throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

This is why you need a strong and clear content strategy to give you direction – so you don’t feel like you’re starting from scratch each time you sit down to write something.

How to create a rock solid content strategy

So now you have a clear understanding of why you need a content strategy for your business. But how do you actually create one?

When designing your content strategy, it helps to go right back to the basics of your brand foundations. Get back to basics here. This will help you answer questions like:

  • Who are you writing your content for?
  • What problems will your content solve for your audience?
  • Which social media platforms will you use?
  • What form will your content take? (Blog posts, social media posts, podcast, eBook etc)

Then decide on the purpose of your content strategy.

If your business is still a baby, your content strategy may focus on brand awareness. You may create content that showcases who you are, what you do and how it can transform the lives of your audience.

Remember your content strategy is just a small part of your whole marketing plan, so keep your goals measurable so you know when it’s time to switch it up to focus on something else.

A simple overview of what this may look like:

Content strategy initially focuses on brand awareness until your mailing list hits 500 people (for example).

Your strategy changes to promoting the launch of your new online course for three months.

Your strategy pivots again to focus on improving SEO.

Remember, a content strategy is a dynamic beast – it will evolve depending on your business goals at a particular time (and may focus on more than one thing at a time).

The point is to always know the purpose of your content (and no, keeping the algorithm happy isn’t your purpose).
